  • Your show host Robert and special guest Larry Van Gelder. Larry is the former COO of Southern Performance Warehouse, (SPW), at one time the largest performance parts warehouse in the southeast. Larry grew up in a suburb of Chicago, his passion for cars started as a teenager while working and racing with his dad on their 1963 SS 409 Chevrolet. Later he attended Southern Illinois University, (SIU) and graduated with an Associate Degree in Automotive Technology. Following graduation 1965, he started working in the engine research laboratory at Shell Oil Company in Southern Illinois. Later that year, he met his wife, Sher. They married on a Saturday in 1966 and spent Sunday “honeymooning” at U.S. 30, (Indiana) dragstrip. Together they bought their first Corvette in 1966, a 425/427 coupe, then a 1968 427 cid followed by the 1969 427 cid show car that they still own today. Over the course of the coming years, Larry worked for Stewart-Warner Instruments, Allis-Chalmers and Hooker Headers. Larry then joined Bellwether Automotive, a warehouse distributor for performance parts. In 1974, Larry moved his family to Florida to work for Ed Monroe at Automotive Engineering/Southern Performance warehouse in Clearwater, Florida. Over the years, Larry forged a relationship with the SEMA organization back when it was still held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California and eventually was elected to the SEMA board of directors and show committee. He also served on the board of the Performance Warehouse Association, as well as three terms as its President. Larry was also on the board of directors for U.S. Performance, an industry buying group. Southern Performance Warehouse was named “WD of the Year” in 1990. In 2000 Larry was presented with the Performance Warehouse Association Pioneer Award for personal contribution and commitment to the industry. Today, Larry is retired and still enjoys working and showing his one owner 1969 Custom Corvette “Nightwind”.
